MY VETERAN DAYS

Trainer at the Coast Guard Academy (New London, CT) aboard the Barque Eagle for the future officers of the United States Coast Guard - sailed the Atlantic twice.

Data Processing Technician (DPT) performing system administration on CTOS, Progress and Oracle databases for pay and personnel (HR) and dependent ID verifications.

*Technically my rating was YN2 (HR), as the DPT rating was not yet formalized.

Engineer: Visual Basic and SQL Developer for Ready Reserve and Decal Distribution Systems of 13th District (Seattle area).

What did my experience in the Coast Guard teach me?

When there's chaos and ambiguity, the Coast Guard taught me that as leaders, it's our role to bring order to chaos, provide a sense of calm to those around us and provide confidence for a successful outcome, and then get everyone engaged towards that successful outcome.  When you're in 30ft seas with 75knot winds taking a 51 degree list in the middle of the Atlantic with no one to call, but your shipmates - you adapt and lead or you capsize.
